Warner Bros. Games Shutting Down MultiVersus
MultiVersus Season 5 Will Be Its Last Season
The official Twitter (X) account of MultiVersus announced on January 31, 2025, that the game will be shutting down permanently on May 30, 2025, following its fifth and final season. In a detailed blog post on the MultiVersus official website, Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
Kicking off on February 4, 2025, and running until May 30, 2025, MultiVersus Season 5 will introduce two new characters to the roster: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. The blog post assures fans that "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 wraps up, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
There have been no official statements from MultiVersus regarding the reasons behind this decision to shut down.
Moving Forward With MultiVersus’ Offline Mode
After Season 5 concludes, players can still enjoy MultiVersus offline through the local gameplay mode, either solo against AI opponents or with up to three friends. To ensure you can continue playing, make sure to download the latest version of MultiVersus anytime between February 4 at 9 AM PST and May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will automatically generate a local save file linked to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account, allowing you to access all your earned and purchased content in offline mode.
As of January 31, 2025, MultiVersus has ceased real money transactions. This means you can no longer buy Gleamium, the game's premium currency, from the online store. However, any Gleamium you already have can still be used to unlock in-game content until the end of Season 5.
MultiVersus First Opened Public Beta In 2022
MultiVersus burst onto the scene with its public beta in July 2022, offering a free-to-play fighting game that many likened to Super Smash Bros., yet set itself apart with a unique 2v2 team-based format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open public beta saw several updates and two seasons of content. The game relaunched in May 2024, bringing new characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, new currencies, and more to the table.
Despite these enhancements, fans expressed ongoing dissatisfaction with the game's performance, citing technical issues, frequent disconnections, and the handling of microtransactions. Reports from July 2024 indicated a 70% drop in player counts on PS4 and PS5.
MultiVersus is scheduled to shut down officially on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, featuring a total of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
You can download MultiVersus on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
