When you begin a new journey in Stardew Valley, you're given the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog to join you on your farm. Initially, the game limited you to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update has changed that, allowing for the adoption of multiple pets.

To unlock this feature, you'll need to focus on building a strong bond with your current pet. Daily care is essential: ensure you fill their water bowl using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically.

Additionally, pet them once a day; you'll know you've successfully interacted when a heart bubble appears above their head. Track your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notification from Marnie via mail, informing you about the availability of additional pets at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

After selecting your new pets, your next step is to ensure they have everything they need. Visit Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each new pet. These bowls are crucial as they provide water and serve as a "home" for your pets, maintaining your friendship level and preventing them from running away if neglected.

Each Pet Bowl can be found under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu and will cost 5,000g along with 25 x Hardwood, which you can gather using a Copper Axe or better. It's wise to build these bowls before adopting new pets to avoid losing friendship points.
