Michael Douglas Unlikely to Return as Hank Pym in Ant-Man

By SebastianMay 23,2025

Michael Douglas, the acclaimed actor known for his role as Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has announced that he is likely finished with the franchise after four big-screen appearances. Douglas has starred in all three Ant-Man films, including the latest, "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" in 2023, which received mixed reviews, as well as "Avengers: Endgame."

With the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" now in production, fans might wonder if they'll see Douglas reprise his role as the shrinking scientist. However, Douglas himself has put those hopes to rest, stating in an interview with Deadline, "I don't think so. I had the experience, and I was excited to do it."

Douglas, who has largely retired from acting, has focused on producing in recent years, with over a dozen credits to his name. Reflecting on his time with Marvel, he shared, "I'd never done a green screen picture before. But I'm enjoying my hiatus and enjoying my life. It was overwhelming running the production company and acting at the same time."

The actor had previously expressed a wish for Hank Pym's character to be killed off in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," hoping to conclude Pym's story arc and heighten the stakes for Paul Rudd's Ant-Man. However, Marvel opted for a different direction for the character.

The disappointing box office performance of "Quantumania" has cast doubts over the future of the Ant-Man series. Despite this, Paul Rudd is confirmed to return in "Avengers: Doomsday." As for other members of the Ant-Man family, such as Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet Van Dyne and Evangeline Lilly's Hope Van Dyne, their participation seems unlikely. Lilly announced in June 2024 that she would step away from acting to focus on her family, further diminishing the chances of her character, Wasp, appearing in "Doomsday."

As anticipation builds for "Avengers: Doomsday," recent leaks from the film's set have teased the return of a surprising location from "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," sparking excitement and speculation among fans about what's to come.
