Matthew Lillard Returns as OG Scream Star in Scream 7

By SamuelApr 25,2025

Matthew Lillard is set to return for Scream 7, as reported by Deadline. Lillard, renowned for his role as the villainous Stuart "Stu" Macher in the original 1996 Scream film, will be starring in the upcoming installment. Fans are buzzing with curiosity about how Lillard could appear in Scream 7, considering the fate of his character in the first movie. It's unclear whether he will reprise his role as Stu or take on a new character. Lillard himself teased his involvement with an intriguing Instagram post:

The anticipation grows as Lillard joins a cast that includes returning stars Neve Campbell, who will again portray Sidney Prescott, and Courteney Cox. Newcomers Scott Foley, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown are also part of the ensemble.

The announcement of Scream 7 comes after a rocky period in its development. In November 2023, Melissa Barrera was let go from the film due to her social media posts regarding the Gaza conflict. Shortly after, Jenna Ortega confirmed she would not return, leaving the Carpenter sisters, central figures since the 2022 Scream reboot, out of the project. Adding to the turmoil, director Christopher Landon stepped down in December 2023, describing the experience as a "dream job that turned into a nightmare." Fortunately, Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter behind the original Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, has stepped in to direct.

Despite stepping away from directing duties, the Scream and Scream 6 directors, Radio Silence, will continue their involvement as executive producers. Guy Busick, who co-wrote the last two entries, is back to pen the screenplay for Scream 7.

Mark your calendars for February 27, 2026, when Scream 7 is slated to hit theaters, promising a thrilling continuation of the iconic horror franchise.
