Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is spearheading efforts to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, confirming his pursuit of securing the rights and bringing the project to fruition. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," he stated.
The adaptation, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was mysteriously shelved a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. "I waited for years...and unfortunately...I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?" he lamented.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor to obtain the rights or otherwise proceed with the film remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows undercover detective Wei Shen as he navigates the treacherous world of Hong Kong's Triad gangs. The game's critical acclaim, including an 8/10 rating from IGN, failed to generate any sequels. Liu's involvement could change that.
