NetEase Games' recent layoff of US-based developers working on the successful Marvel Rivals has sent shockwaves through the industry. Despite the game's positive reception, the company has let go of key personnel, including the game director. This news comes alongside the announcement of a significant update for the second half of Marvel Rivals' Season 1.
NetEase's Strategic Shift Impacts North American Studios
Marvel Rivals US Devs Laid Off by NetEase
On February 19, 2025, Thaddeus Sasser, director of Marvel Rivals, announced on LinkedIn that he and other California-based developers had been laid off by NetEase Games. Sasser highlighted the irony of the layoffs, stating his team's success in launching a new and successful franchise. Despite the setback, he's proactively using his LinkedIn platform to help his former colleagues find new employment opportunities, showcasing their talents and skills to potential employers. He specifically highlighted Garry McGee, the game's technical designer, praising his skills and readily endorsing him for future positions.
This act of support underscores the impact of the layoffs and the industry's current climate.
NetEase's Controversial Moves in North America
Marvel Rivals was developed by teams in both China and Seattle. While Sasser's team focused on game and level design, the Chinese team handled other aspects of development. The success of the game, however, hasn't shielded the US team from the broader industry trends and NetEase's apparent strategic shift away from North America. Reports suggest NetEase is scaling back its operations in the region, citing instances like the withdrawal of funding from Worlds Untold and the termination of their partnership with Jar of Sparks as evidence. NetEase has not publicly commented on the layoffs.
Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update: Second Half
New Heroes, Maps, and Balance Adjustments
Despite the internal restructuring, Marvel Rivals continues to evolve. The game's YouTube channel revealed details of a significant update for the second half of Season 1, featuring new heroes, maps, and balance changes. The update introduces The Thing and Human Torch, completing the Fantastic Four roster, and a new map, Central Park, which now includes Dracula's castle.
Lead combat designer Zhiyong detailed balance adjustments, including changes to energy costs for characters with quick ultimate recharges, and adjustments to the survivability and movement of various Vanguard characters. Overpowered heroes like Storm and Moon Knight will also receive nerfs. One planned feature, a rank reset, was met with negative feedback and has been removed from the update.
The update’s release date is February 21, 2025, at 12:00 AM (PDT).
