NetEase Games is making significant changes to the Marvel Rivals post-launch roadmap, aiming to shorten its seasons and introduce at least one new hero every month. This strategic shift is designed to maintain live service momentum and keep the game engaging for its player base.
The new content release schedule was previewed in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video. The video, lasting 15 minutes, announced that Season 2 will kick off on April 11 with the introduction of the new Vanguard, Emma Frost. Mid-season, Ultron will join the roster, though his class details will be revealed closer to his launch. Both characters are set to bring fresh abilities and dynamics to the game, but the most significant changes to hero impact on matches will start in Season 3.
In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which does not yet have a release date, NetEase plans to reduce season lengths from three months to two. This adjustment will allow for more frequent major content updates while maintaining the commitment to introduce at least one new hero every half-season. This means players won't have to wait as long between new hero releases, enhancing the game's pace and excitement.
Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen shared insights in the Dev Vision video, stating, "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all. Social media discussions have added pressure to keep the game exciting, and to a certain extent, we agree." Chen emphasized the goal of keeping the audience's excitement alive, akin to the game's opening months, and highlighted that the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning. NetEase aims to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by exploring new modes and introducing a diverse roster of characters. More details on how these changes will impact players will be disclosed before Season 3 launches.
Just hours ago, NetEase revealed more about Marvel Rivals Season 2, announcing a shift from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered on the Hellfire Gala. This change will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with further details to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, attracting 10 million players within three days. The game, a free-to-play superhero team-based PvP shooter, is available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The launch on Steam was particularly impressive, with 480,990 concurrent players. Season 1 in January saw an even higher peak of 644,269 concurrent players, making Marvel Rivals the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform.
Despite a recent decline in concurrent players, Marvel Rivals remains highly popular and one of Steam's most-played games. The upcoming Season 2 and the planned changes for Season 3 are expected to reinvigorate the player base.
