The recently concluded Mario Kart World Direct showcased an array of exciting details about the upcoming kart-racing game from the Mario Kart series. Dive in to discover more about the game's expansive free-roam world and its innovative features.
Mario Kart World Direct Reveals
An Interconnected World
Nintendo's Mario Kart World Direct, held on April 17, provided an in-depth look at the game's features. Players can now freely drive around Mario Kart World, exploring both familiar regions and new territories within the Mario universe.
According to Nintendo, "In Mario Kart World, the game’s courses are seamlessly connected across the world with roads linking them – allowing players to navigate between courses effortlessly!"
Explore the vibrant world of Mario like never before, with stunning landscapes and iconic landmarks spread throughout. As you roam, uncover hidden items and undertake missions to enhance your driving skills beyond traditional races.
The game introduces both new and classic courses, including Mario Bros. Circuit, Crown City, Salty Salty Speedway, Starview Peak, Boo Cinema, Toad's Factory, Peach Beach, and Wario Shipyard. These classic tracks have been reimagined to blend seamlessly into the expansive new Mario Kart experience.
Grand Prix and Knockout Tour
Mario Kart World offers two primary racing modes: Grand Prix and Knockout Tour, each accommodating up to 24 racers, marking the largest field in the series' history. Racers must navigate a variety of obstacles, including cars firing Bullet Bills and attacks from Hammer Bros.
In the Grand Prix, players compete in four consecutive races to win cups like the Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, and Star Cup. A unique feature allows players to travel between races to continue their Grand Prix journey. Completing all the cups unlocks a speculated "colorful course," believed to be Rainbow Road.
The newly introduced Knockout Tour mode challenges players to race across the world in a survival-style format. To advance, racers must finish in a qualifying position; otherwise, they're eliminated from the rally.
Items, Characters, and More
Mario Kart World introduces a fresh arsenal of items alongside returning favorites. New items include the Coin Shell, which can knock opponents away and leave a coin trail, the Ice Flower, which freezes opponents on contact, and the Big Mushroom, which enlarges the player's kart, allowing them to squash competitors.
The game features a diverse lineup of classic Mushroom Kingdom characters, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser, joined by new additions like Goomba, Spike, and even Cow. Players can also unlock alternate costumes hidden throughout the world, adding a layer of exploration and personalization.
Playing With Friends
Mario Kart World offers a variety of game modes to enjoy with friends. Time Trials let players compete against global ghost data online. VS mode provides extensive customization, enabling players to form teams for head-to-head races. Battle mode returns with Coin Runners, where the goal is to collect the most coins, and Balloon Battle, where the last player with an intact balloon wins.
The game supports both local and online multiplayer. Up to four players can race in split-screen on a single system, while local wireless play allows up to eight players (two per Switch 2 device) to compete. The new GameChat feature on Switch 2 enhances communication, allowing players to chat and view each other's screens.
For added assistance, Mario Kart World includes features like Smart Steering, which helps keep players on track, Auto-accelerate for automatic forward movement, Tilt controls for a more immersive experience, and compatibility with the new Joy-Con 2 Wheel for enhanced racing control.
