The highly-anticipated Blade movie, a project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has seemingly hit a dead end, leaving fans disappointed and without the chance to see Mahershala Ali as the iconic Daywalker. The film, announced back in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con, has faced numerous obstacles, resulting in a complete halt in production.
This week, rapper and artist Flying Lotus took to social media to reveal his involvement in the project, stating that he was signed on to compose the music for Blade before it fell through. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he tweeted. He also expressed doubt about the project's revival, despite his initial excitement for it.
Adding to the disappointment, acclaimed costume designer Ruth E. Carter confirmed during an appearance on The John Campea Show that she was set to design costumes for Blade, which was planned to be set in the 1920s. This setting would have offered a unique and visually stunning backdrop, enhancing both the costume and production design.
Actor Delroy Lindo, who was also attached to star alongside Ali, shared his perspective on the project's collapse. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lindo expressed that Marvel seemed genuinely interested in his input, and the initial conversations with producers, the writer, and the director were promising. "It was really exciting conceptually, but it was also exciting in terms of the character that was going to form. And then, for whatever reason, it just went off the rails," he lamented.
Despite the setbacks, MCU boss Kevin Feige remains optimistic about bringing Blade to life. In an interview with Omelete in November 2024, Feige reiterated the studio's commitment to the project, emphasizing their love for the character and Mahershala Ali's interpretation. "We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala's take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You're all up to date on what's happening," he stated. Feige confirmed that the character would indeed make it to the MCU, though no new release date has been set since the movie was removed from the release schedule in October 2024.
