Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new mobile game for Android enthusiasts called MageTrain, a fast-paced pixel art roguelike that echoes the spirit of Nimble Quest. If you've enjoyed the snake-like mechanics of Nimble Quest, MageTrain's gameplay will feel instantly familiar, as it draws significant inspiration from its predecessor.
What's MageTrain Like?
MageTrain seamlessly blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into an addictive gameplay experience. You take control of a line of heroes that trail behind you, much like a snake, navigating through arenas. Each hero autonomously engages enemies, but it's your strategic oversight that keeps the train moving smoothly. You decide the order of your heroes, as their abilities shift based on their position in the line.
At launch, MageTrain features nine unique heroes, including one who uniquely throws birds, each equipped with distinct skills that vary depending on their role in the formation. As you guide your heroes through eight varied dungeons, you'll encounter 28 different enemy types and unlock 30 skills to enhance your team. Along the journey, you'll gather gold and power-ups to bolster your chances.
The roguelike structure ensures each run is unique, with branching paths and upgrade choices that keep the game fresh and challenging. Similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL, there are no set levels and no mid-run saves; one misstep or overwhelming enemy onslaught means starting over from scratch.
It Isn't Slow-Paced
What makes MageTrain engaging is the constant improvement you experience with each playthrough, even if you don't make it to the end. You'll learn when to play defensively, when to launch an all-out attack, and when to focus on just surviving a bit longer.
MageTrain is now available on Android and is free to play. Dive into the action by downloading it from the Google Play Store.
