The much-anticipated Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward with the announcement that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the creative minds behind the successful Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, have been tapped to write the screenplay. This exciting news comes as part of a renewed effort to bring Hasbro's iconic board game to the big screen, following Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro.
Daley and Goldstein, who have also recently written and directed their original film, Mayday, bring a wealth of experience to the project. Their previous work includes writing credits on major films such as The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their ability to handle high-profile projects with flair and creativity.
The Monopoly film will be produced by Margot Robbie under her production company, LuckyChap, adding another layer of star power and creative vision to the project. This collaboration marks a fresh start for the film, which has seen numerous attempts over the years to bring it to life.
Previous efforts to adapt Monopoly into a movie date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott expressed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were brought on to write the script, but the project did not move forward. Another attempt in 2015 saw Lionsgate and Hasbro teaming up with Andrew Niccol as the writer, and in 2019, it was reported that Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved. However, none of these versions came to fruition.
With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay and Robbie's production expertise, fans of the classic board game can look forward to a new and hopefully successful take on Monopoly. As the project progresses, it's clear that this version aims to "pass Go" and deliver a film that captures the essence and excitement of the beloved game.
