Keanu Reeves has recently shared the most promising update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic film, Constantine. In his role as the enigmatic occult detective and exorcist, John Constantine, Reeves captivated audiences in the 2005 adaptation of the DC Comics character. Now, after nearly two decades of fan demand and Reeves' own enthusiasm for a sequel, it appears that Constantine 2 is closer to becoming a reality.
Reeves revealed to Inverse that he and the team have been working on the project for over a decade. They recently pitched a story to DC Studios, which received a positive response. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, 'Okay,'" Reeves explained. "So, we're going to try and write a script."
Despite this encouraging news, it's important to note that there's no guarantee that the script for Constantine 2 will be greenlit by DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The sequel is not yet a confirmed project in the rebooted DC Universe, and neither Gunn nor Safran have publicly mentioned it as a potential addition. Thus, the project remains on the edge of possibility.
However, Reeves has teased that should the film come to fruition, it will be set in the same world as the original. "We're not going off that," he assured fans, before humorously adding, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."
These comments follow remarks made by producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura in September. Speaking to ComicBook, di Bonaventura revealed that a script for Constantine 2 was already in his inbox, though he admitted to being too apprehensive to read it due to his high hopes for the project. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
