Thailand may be a world away from Hogwarts, but that hasn't stopped Jason Isaacs, star of The White Lotus Season 3, from weighing in on who should step into his shoes as Lucius Malfoy in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series. In a candid interview with Variety, Isaacs humorously suggested Meryl Streep for the role, praising her versatility and limitless talent.
"She can do anything, that woman. There’s literally no limit to what she can do," Isaacs remarked. Streep, who has portrayed a male character in the HBO miniseries "Angels in America," could indeed bring a unique interpretation to Lucius Malfoy. Despite his bold casting choice, Isaacs admitted he has no advice for whoever ends up taking on the role, stating, "I wouldn’t have any advice at all. Why would I bother? I know some of the people they’re casting already. They’re brilliant actors. It’s going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me."
Isaacs first brought Lucius Malfoy to life in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" and continued to portray the character through to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2." As for the new adaptation, the only confirmed casting so far is John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, a role previously filled by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. Rumors are swirling that Paapa Essiedu may be cast as Severus Snape, originally played by Alan Rickman, and Janet McTeer could take on the role of Minerva McGonagall, previously portrayed by Maggie Smith, though these remain unconfirmed.
