Hideo Kojima Reveals Anime Adaptation Plans for Death Stranding

By PeytonAug 11,2025

Death Stranding is expanding beyond its live-action film, with an anime adaptation also in development. In a recent Vogue Japan interview (via VGC), director Hideo Kojima, ahead of the June release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, confirmed that an anime version of the acclaimed game is in progress.

Discussing his work with A24 on the live-action Death Stranding film, Kojima briefly highlighted the anime project. His translated quote reads:

"I am collaborating with A24 on a live-action film of 'DEATH STRANDING.' Recent game-to-film adaptations, like 'The Last of Us,' stay true to their source, while others, like 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie,' cater to fans. Both approaches have value, but as a filmmaker, I aim to craft a 'DEATH STRANDING' film that stands out as a cinematic achievement, targeting accolades at Cannes or Venice. We’re also developing an anime adaptation."

No studio has been named for the anime, but the project promises another unique take on the Death Stranding universe.

In 2023, A24 announced its partnership with Kojima Productions for a live-action Death Stranding film. Kojima emphasized that the movie would not be a direct retelling of the game. "Our goal is to appeal not just to gamers but to all film enthusiasts," he said. "We’re building a Death Stranding universe exclusive to cinema, something entirely new."

Earlier this year, Michael Sarnoski, director of A Quiet Place: Day One, reportedly joined the project as writer and director. Actor Norman Reedus, a star of the original game, expressed enthusiasm for reprising his role, saying he’d "absolutely" participate if given the chance.

The prospect of a Death Stranding anime sparks intrigue, as the choice of studio could shape its tone and style. A Studio Trigger production, for instance, could deliver a bold, visually striking interpretation of this unique world.
