Harry Potter TV Series Unveils Initial Cast: Hagrid, Snape Among First Six

By ChloeMay 07,2025

Warner Bros. and HBO have officially announced the first six actors who will bring fresh interpretations to iconic Hogwarts teachers in the much-anticipated Harry Potter television series. This announcement comes after months of speculation and theories about how the new adaptation will reimagine the beloved tales of Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

The casting reveal includes John Lithgow, known for his roles in Conclave and Dexter, who will portray Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow had previously hinted at his involvement, expressing the weight of stepping into such an iconic role. "I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid," he shared with ScreenRant in February. "But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes."

Joining Lithgow are Nick Frost, renowned for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, who will take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu, acclaimed for I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, who will embody Severus Snape. Completing the lineup are Janet McTeer from Me Before You and The Menu as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon of The Favourite and Present Laughter fame as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse, known for The Fast Show and Alice Through the Looking Glass, as Argus Filch.

Showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, along with director and executive producer Mark Mylod, expressed their enthusiasm about the cast. "We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life," they stated.

The roles of Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape are not only central to the Harry Potter universe but are also significant figures in broader pop culture. Each actor faces the challenge of filling these legendary shoes with their unique interpretations.

While the series does not yet have a release date, filming is expected to commence soon. Details about how the series will diverge from J.K. Rowling's original novels and the film adaptations of the 2000s and early 2010s remain undisclosed. However, Warner Bros. has assured that the show will explore Harry's story "a little bit more in depth than you can in just a two-hour film." J.K. Rowling is involved in the show's development, despite the controversy surrounding her.
