GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

By AaliyahMay 17,2025

The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its lead members telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The excitement is palpable within the GTA 6 Mapping Discord, where the community of 370 members, soon to exceed 400, is diving deep into the wealth of new information provided by the trailer.

"It’s an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," said Garza, the overseer of the Discord server, to IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we’re really just getting started." The project kicked off in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, which some fans believe were subtly referenced by Rockstar at the beginning of Trailer 2. Until now, the mapping efforts were based on those leaks and the first trailer released in December 2023.

The most recent version of the GTA 6 map, v0.049, was released at the end of March by project lead DuPz0r. However, with the flood of new details from Trailer 2, this version is already outdated. The new trailer has not only confirmed plot details and introduced 70 new screenshots but also revealed more about the explorable locations in the state of Leonida, GTA 6's fictional version of Florida.

Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City, GTA 6’s rendition of Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys archipelago, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a national landmark near the state's northern border. The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of every element shown, striving to match these fictional spaces with their real-world inspirations to refine the GTA 6 map further.

Once their efforts are complete, DuPz0r will release an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as their best preview yet of what to expect when GTA 6 launches in May 2026. Should Rockstar release more assets or gameplay footage in the meantime, the volunteers are ready to refine their work even further. Only upon the game's release will they be able to compare their fan-made map with the actual game to assess their accuracy.

However, the project faces potential legal challenges from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two. Earlier this year, a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to stop after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. When asked about the possibility of similar action against the mapping project, Garza expressed "some mild concern" but noted that the project has operated without disruption for a long time. "We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map," he explained, suggesting that the project might be seen as beneficial in generating interest in the game. Nonetheless, Garza acknowledged that a cease and desist notice could still be possible as the map becomes more accurate.

While we await further developments, you can explore more about GTA 6, including all the details uncovered so far and the fan theories sparked by Trailer 2.
