This iconic franchise, traditionally an Xbox exclusive, is breaking new ground by launching simultaneously on PS5, Xbox, and PC on August 26. Dive in to discover more about its groundbreaking multiplatform release and the enhancements that await eager gamers.
Gears of War: Reloaded Release Date Announced
Multiplatform Release
For years, Gears of War has been synonymous with Xbox, a hallmark of Microsoft's gaming library. However, in a surprising move announced via a Twitter (X) post on May 6, Xbox revealed that Gears of War: Reloaded will be accessible across all platforms on August 26, including the PS5.
This decision aligns with Xbox's evolving strategy to make its exclusive titles available on a wider range of platforms. In a January interview with GamerTag Radio, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer emphasized this shift, stating, "We love our platform and our hardware but we're not going to put walls up where people can engage with the great games our studios are building."
The move towards multiplatform releases could set a precedent for future titles, such as the eagerly awaited Gears of War: E-Day. Although no official confirmation has been made regarding E-Day's release strategy, fans are hopeful that it will follow in Reloaded's footsteps. Xbox's approach to its exclusives remains a topic of keen interest among the gaming community.
Faithful Remaster and Natively Optimized
The announcement of Reloaded took many by surprise, especially given that the original game was remastered in 2015 as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. In an Xbox Wire post on May 5, The Coalition's Studio Head Mike Crump provided insights into what players can anticipate from this latest release.
Crump stated, "As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever."
Reloaded promises significant performance upgrades over its 2015 counterpart. While the Ultimate Edition offered 1080p at 30fps for the campaign and 60fps for multiplayer, Reloaded will deliver a stunning 4k resolution at 60fps for the campaign and an exhilarating 120fps for multiplayer. The game will feature 4k assets, remastered textures, enhanced post-processing visual effects, improved shadows and reflections, and more.
The Xbox Wire post also highlighted that "Players will gain immediate access to all post-launch downloadable content at no additional cost — this includes the bonus Campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics unlockable through progression."
In a gesture of appreciation to existing fans, Reloaded offers a free upgrade to those who own The Ultimate Edition before the game's announcement. Eligible Xbox account holders will receive a code for the upgrade via direct message before the launch.
Gears of War: Reloaded is slated for release on August 26 and will be available at a price of $39.99 across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The game will be accessible on day one with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, ensuring that fans can dive straight into the action without delay.
