New Game Release from Palworld Developer on Nintendo Switch

By LaylaFeb 07,2025

Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo eShop Launch Amidst Legal Battle

Pocketpair, the developer behind the controversial Palworld, unexpectedly released its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This launch comes as a surprise, given Pocketpair's ongoing legal dispute with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company.

OverDungeon, a unique blend of action card game and tower defense mechanics with roguelike elements, initially launched on Steam in 2019. This marks Pocketpair's first Nintendo Switch title, announced without prior fanfare. To celebrate the launch, OverDungeon is currently available at a 50% discount until January 24th. The decision to release OverDungeon on the Nintendo eShop, while Palworld is available on other platforms like PS5 and Xbox, has sparked speculation online, with some suggesting it's a strategic response to the ongoing lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed in September 2024, alleges that Palworld's Pal Spheres infringe on Pokémon's creature-capturing patents. Despite the legal challenges, Pocketpair has remained active, releasing a major update for Palworld in December and now launching OverDungeon.

A History of Comparisons:

OverDungeon isn't the first Pocketpair game to draw comparisons to Nintendo titles. Their 2020 release, Craftopia, a similarly styled RPG, bears resemblance to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Both Craftopia and Palworld continue to receive updates and support, with Palworld recently announcing a collaboration with Terraria, featuring a new Pal and promising further crossover content in 2025.

The legal battle between Pocketpair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company remains ongoing, with some experts predicting a lengthy process. Despite the uncertainty, Pocketpair has indicated further plans for Palworld in 2025, including a Mac port and a potential mobile release.
