Frostpunk 1886 Announcement Reveal
Original Frostpunk Remade Using The Unreal Engine
In an unexpected twist, Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios announced their next venture in the series: Frostpunk 1886. Shared via a Twitter (X) post on April 24, this project is a remake of the original game, now powered by the Unreal Engine.
The announcement highlighted that Frostpunk 1886 will introduce a brand new Purpose Path, the much-anticipated mod support, and more, all while preserving the essence of the original game. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, the developers outlined their vision for this ambitious project.
11 bit Studios is shifting away from their proprietary Liquid Engine, used for the first Frostpunk, to the Unreal Engine. Having developed Frostpunk 2 with Unreal Engine 5, they recognized the potential to enhance the original game significantly. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.
Eyeing A 2027 Release
Development for Frostpunk 1886 is now underway, with a targeted release in 2027. The team at 11 bit Studios is dedicated to crafting an experience that not only welcomes new players to the Frostpunk universe but also satisfies the cravings of long-time fans, offering a game they'll want to revisit time and again.
Looking ahead, the studio plans to enrich the game with new content through potential DLCs. Aiming to release games more frequently than every five years, Frostpunk 1886 marks the beginning of this new approach. In the interim, fans can immerse themselves in Frostpunk 2, which is set to receive a free major update on May 8, followed by a console launch in the summer, and more, as per its roadmap.
Frostpunk 2 is currently available on PC, with its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S scheduled for this summer. To keep up with the latest news on the game, be sure to check out our related article below!
