"The Flash Director Admits Film's Failure Due to Lack of Character Interest"

By JosephMay 02,2025

Andy Muschietti, the director behind the DC Extended Universe's "The Flash," has openly discussed the film's disappointing box office performance. In an interview with Radio Tu, translated by Variety, Muschietti attributed the film's failure to a lack of broad appeal, particularly noting that "a lot of people just don’t care about the Flash as a character." He emphasized that the movie did not successfully engage "the four quadrants" of the audience, a term used in the film industry to describe the goal of appealing to all demographics: males under 25, males over 25, females under 25, and females over 25. This broad appeal is crucial for a film with a hefty $200 million budget, as Muschietti pointed out, "When you spend $200 million making a movie, [Warner Bros.] wants to bring even your grandmother to the theaters."

Muschietti further elaborated that the lack of interest in the Flash character was particularly evident among the two female quadrants, which he learned from private conversations. He acknowledged that this, along with other factors, contributed to the film's underperformance. These other factors include the film's poor critical reception, its heavy reliance on computer-generated imagery (CGI), including the controversial use of CGI to recreate deceased actors without their families' consent, and its release at the tail end of a now-defunct film universe.

Despite the setback with "The Flash," DC Studios seems to retain confidence in Muschietti. He is reportedly set to helm "The Brave and the Bold," the inaugural Batman film in the newly envisioned DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. This move suggests that DC is looking forward to new beginnings, even as they navigate the challenges of past projects.
