The excitement surrounding a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has surged once again following Square Enix's launch of an official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. The site, primarily in Japanese, highlights the game's original release date of July 7, 2000, and its upcoming 25th anniversary celebration this year. It teases fans with the promise of "various projects, including merchandise and collaborations" to mark the occasion, stirring speculation about the much-anticipated remake.
The timing of the website's launch has not gone unnoticed by fans, especially with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct scheduled for April 2. Many are hopeful that Square Enix might use this platform to announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the Switch 2. While the website itself focuses on merchandise and collaborations, the mention of "various projects" has fueled further speculation.
Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, hinted at what a Final Fantasy 9 remake might entail. He acknowledged the game's vast scope and expressed doubts about whether it could be remade as a single title, suggesting it might follow the multi-part format similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
Adding to the excitement, earlier in 2024, Yoshi-P announced Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector's and Digital Collector's Editions of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion Dawntrail. These include the Final Fantasy 9 Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders offering a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at more Final Fantasy 9 references, leaving fans curious about the underlying reasons.

Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have been circulating since it appeared in a 2021 Nvidia leak of upcoming titles, which also included other Square Enix games like the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC. Although many of these titles have since been announced or released, Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reported to be in development in June 2021, but updates on this project have been scarce since then.
The anticipation continues to build as fans eagerly await any official word from Square Enix on the Final Fantasy 9 remake.
