Fable Release Pushed to 2026, New Pre-Alpha Gameplay Unveiled by Microsoft

By ClaireApr 28,2025

Microsoft has announced a delay for the highly anticipated Fable reboot, shifting its release from 2025 to 2026. This news came alongside a first look at new gameplay footage, offering fans a glimpse into what they can expect from this refreshed take on the beloved Xbox franchise, originally crafted by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios. The project is being spearheaded by UK's Playground Games, renowned for their critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series.

During a recent episode of the Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, who transitioned from Rare studio head to head of Xbox Game Studios last fall, addressed the delay directly. He expressed enthusiasm about the game's progress and reassured the community that the additional time would be well worth it. Duncan highlighted Playground's track record with Forza Horizon, noting their ability to create visually stunning and highly praised games, and expressed confidence in their vision for Fable.

The new gameplay footage, albeit brief at 50 seconds, showcased pre-alpha scenes of combat, urban exploration, and a character navigating a fantasy forest on horseback. Notably, the classic Fable humor was evident with a scene featuring the protagonist kicking a chicken. The combat sequences displayed a variety of weapons, including a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, a two-handed sword, and magical fireball attacks. Additionally, a cutscene revealed a trap set with sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature, setting the stage for an engaging encounter.

First announced in 2020 as a "new beginning," the Fable reboot has been steadily building anticipation. A reveal at the 2023 Xbox Game Showcase, featuring Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd, provided deeper insights into the game's direction. Subsequent updates, including a trailer at the 2024 Xbox Showcase, have kept the excitement alive.

This reboot marks the first mainline Fable game since Fable 3 in 2010 and stands as one of Xbox Game Studios' most eagerly awaited titles. Duncan's comments on the podcast underscored the team's commitment to delivering a game that not only honors the franchise's legacy but also pushes the boundaries with Playground's unique take on the world of Albion.

For the latest updates and more detailed information on Fable, fans are encouraged to stay tuned to official Xbox channels and join the conversation on the Xbox community forums.
