On January 29, 2025, Pokémon's YouTube channel unveiled a captivating animated short to honor the Lunar New Year, celebrating the Year of the Snake. The short showcases a playful interaction between two Ekans dangling from a tree, one of which is a rare Shiny variant. The Shiny Ekans, mesmerized by its surroundings, accidentally falls onto a passing Arbok. Amidst the surprise, it evolves after being threatened by its peers. Recognized as one of their own, the other Arboks follow the newly evolved Shiny golden Arbok as it ventures out of the forest.

Despite its brevity, the video tugged at the heartstrings of many viewers. One fan remarked, "Even though we were able to meet, it's sad to say goodbye," capturing the essence of the brief encounter between the two Ekans. Another viewer likened the interaction to that of children, emphasizing that differences in appearance are inconsequential as the two Ekans bonded instantly, despite one being a Shiny variant.

The nostalgia factor was strong for others who reminisced about their first encounters with Shiny Pokémon. One fan shared, "When I was playing Gold and Silver, the first differently colored Pokémon I encountered was Arbok. It ran away before I could catch it, a regret I still hold. However, I'm thrilled to reunite with it through this video!"

In addition to the animated short, The Pokémon Company has rolled out a series of events and merchandise to enhance the Lunar New Year festivities.

On January 9, 2025, Pokémon GO launched its Lunar New Year event as part of the Dual Destiny season, spanning from December 3, 2024, to March 4, 2025. This event boosts the encounter and Shiny rates of snake-like Pokémon, including Ekans, Onix, Gyarados, Dratini, Dunsparce, Snivy, and Darumaka. Though Darumaka appears more humanoid, its design draws inspiration from the Daruma doll, symbolizing good luck and perseverance.

The event also features themed Field Research tasks and special 2 km Eggs, which may hatch into Makuhita, Nosepass, Meditite, Duskull, or Skorupi. Additionally, a themed Timed Research offers players the chance to earn Zygarde Cells, essential for altering Zygarde's forms.
