A new Street Fighter movie is gearing up for battle, and it has found its director in Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the quirky comedy show The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will be at the helm of this latest film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, set to hit theaters on March 20, 2026.
Capcom, the creators of the iconic fighting game, are said to be "deeply involved" in this project, ensuring that the essence of Street Fighter is captured on the big screen. This film marks another attempt to bring the beloved franchise to life, following the memorable 1994 movie that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia in a standout performance as M. Bison. While critics may have been divided at the time, the film has since become a cult classic among fans.
Details on casting are yet to be announced, but fans can look forward to seeing familiar Street Fighter characters make their cinematic return. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on Talk to Me. However, they left the project last summer, paving the way for Sakurai's unique, absurdist approach, which could inject a fresh and exciting twist into the franchise.
While we eagerly await more news on the film, fans can dive into the latest Street Fighter game, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
