Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians

By ConnorMay 14,2025

Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for Destiny 2, marking the "Year of Prophecy" with two new expansions and significant updates for both paying and free players. This year promises four major content releases, split between two paid expansions and two free updates, ensuring a thrilling experience for all.

Kicking off the year is "Rite of the Nine," a free update that reimagines dungeon diving for both veterans and newcomers. Available now, this update features familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, but with unique twists and refreshed weapons. Players will reconnect with Orin, adding a fresh narrative layer to their adventures.

On July 15, the first paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the mysterious Nine. This expansion introduces new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and takes players to the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2's dungeons, Kepler offers puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges, along with new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out major core game innovations. These include revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. Players can choose from Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops, tailored for solo players seeking quick, self-contained gameplay. With 50 new modifiers, players can customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards through curated activity rotations.

As with any new expansion, pre-order bonuses are available, including an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Here's a detailed look at the pre-order options:

The second major update, "Ash & Iron," will launch on September 9, followed by the second expansion, "Renegades," on December 2. "Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3.

These announcements come as welcome news to the Destiny 2 community, especially following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, just months after another round of 100 layoffs.

While Destiny 2 keeps Bungie busy, the studio is also working on the reboot of the classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first real look at Marathon came recently, and IGN's hands-on preview expressed optimism about its potential to satisfy the Bungie PvP itch when it launches on PC and consoles in September.
