The critically acclaimed series Shōgun, which swept up an impressive 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is gearing up for an exciting second season. Cosmo Jarvis, who brilliantly portrayed pilot John Blackthorn, is set to reprise his role and will also step into the shoes of a co-executive producer, as announced in an official press release from FX.
Joining him, lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who committed to Season 2 back in May after the show's surprising renewal from its original limited series status, has been elevated to the role of executive producer. Following his contributions to the first season, Sanada will continue to shape the series' direction. Production for Season 2 is slated to kick off in January 2026, returning to the familiar filming grounds of Vancouver.
FX has teased that the upcoming season will be "a wholly original new chapter to the first season," which was an adaptation of James Clavell’s renowned novel. The network provided insight into the narrative arcs and their connections:"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) battled for his survival as his adversaries in the Council of Regents rallied against him. The arrival of a mysterious European ship, carrying the English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis), proved pivotal. Blackthorne's strategic insights shifted the balance of power in Toranaga's favor, leading to victory in a monumental civil war.
"Season two of Shōgun is set a decade later and will delve deeper into the historically-inspired tale of these two men from vastly different backgrounds, whose destinies remain intertwined."
With any luck, fans can anticipate new episodes of this stellar series by the end of 2026. Until then, the wait continues, filled with eager anticipation.
