Basic Information

Elytra are unique gliding wings. In their folded state, they resemble a cloak, but when in use, they unfurl into impressive, functional wings. While incredibly useful for fast travel and impressive feats, they are only naturally obtainable in the End after defeating the Ender Dragon. They are found within End Ships located near End Cities. However, alternative methods exist for other game modes, detailed below.

Obtaining Elytra in Minecraft Survival Mode

Preparing for Battle

Before venturing to the End, thorough preparation is crucial. Diamond or Netherite armor, ideally enchanted for protection, is essential. A powerful enchanted sword and bow (consider Infinity or Power enchantments for the bow) are vital for combat. Stock up on plenty of arrows or a crossbow with fireworks for ranged attacks. Potions of regeneration, strength, and slow falling will significantly aid your survival. Bring ample food, ideally golden apples for emergency healing, and plenty of blocks for navigating the End's unique terrain. Finally, a carved pumpkin will protect you from the aggressive Endermen.

Activating the Portal to the End

To access the End, you need 12 Eyes of Ender. Each Eye requires Blaze Powder (from Blaze Rods dropped by Blazes in Nether Fortresses) and an Ender Pearl (dropped by Endermen). Crafting an Eye of Ender requires one of each.

Finding the Stronghold

Use the Eyes of Ender to locate the Stronghold. Throw an Eye; it will fly towards the Stronghold, indicating its general direction. Once you've found it, navigate the perilous underground labyrinth to the End portal room. Place the remaining Eyes of Ender in the portal frame to activate it.

Battle with the Dragon

Defeating the Ender Dragon is essential. Prioritize destroying the End Crystals first, either with ranged attacks or melee combat. Once the crystals are gone, focus your attacks on the dragon itself. Ranged attacks are generally more effective.

Inside the Ship

After defeating the dragon, a portal to the End Gateway will appear. Use an Ender Pearl to teleport to the outer islands. Search for End Ships near the End Cities. Inside, you'll find the Elytra in an Item Frame.
