Captain America: Brave New World's box office performance is raising concerns. While the film has grossed approximately $289.4 million globally, a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend threatens its profitability.
According to Deadline, the film's $180 million production budget necessitates a global box office gross of around $425 million to break even. The initial $100 million domestic opening, exceeding expectations, was followed by a second weekend gross of only $28.2 million domestically. This steep decline mirrors the performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.
Despite its current status as the biggest 2025 theatrical release, the substantial second-weekend drop is causing analysts to express concern. Comscore senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted to Variety that this decline reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically seen with Marvel films. Deadline projects a final global box office gross of approximately $450 million for Captain America: Brave New World.
The film's release coincided with largely negative critical reception; IGN's review awarded it a 5/10, citing a lack of innovation and underwhelming impact despite strong performances from the cast.
Marvel Studios and Disney are hoping for a significant box office rebound to counteract this negative trend, particularly given the less-than-stellar performance of recent MCU films (excluding the highly successful Deadpool & Wolverine). The studios are looking to build momentum for upcoming releases, including Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
