The Wheel of Time has come to an abrupt halt on Prime Video after Amazon decided to cancel the series following the conclusion of Season 3. According to a report by Deadline, the decision came after "lengthy deliberations," with executives appreciating the show but ultimately unable to justify its financial viability.
The series, an adaptation of Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy novels, stars Rosamund Pike among others. While the first two seasons stirred controversy among fans due to significant deviations from the source material, Season 3 managed to win over most of the fanbase. Many felt that this season laid the groundwork for even more exciting developments in future episodes.
The cancellation is particularly disheartening for fans, given that much of The Wheel of Time's expansive narrative remains untold. The show seemed to be just hitting its stride. However, financial considerations proved too significant for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios, the latter of which also produces the costly The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
As Deadline noted:
... the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said.
IGN's review of The Wheel of Time Season 3 awarded it an 8/10, stating: "The Wheel of Time finally achieves its full potential in season 3, which is filled with rich characters finding their place in Robert Jordan’s complex fantasy world."
Despite the end of the TV adaptation, fans can look forward to a 'AAA Open-World RPG' based on The Wheel of Time. IGN recently interviewed iwot Studios, which holds the rights to the franchise, to learn more about this upcoming game.
