Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has recently unveiled a new trailer for their much-anticipated sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is inching closer to its release date. Amidst the excitement, the studio took a moment to reminisce about one of their landmark projects, This War of Mine, which catapulted them to global acclaim over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its stark, despairing ambiance, The Alters adopts a more vibrant and frequently humorous storyline, focusing on the trials faced by different versions of its protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite the stark contrast in tone, the developers highlight a deep-seated connection between the two games, rooted in the theme of survival.
Although the settings and atmospheres differ significantly, both titles explore the essence of survival under extreme conditions. In This War of Mine, players manage the grueling day-to-day survival of a group of civilians amidst the chaos of a war-torn city, constantly juggling scarce resources. Conversely, The Alters casts players into a race against time, where they must navigate a mobile base to escape the destructive path of a sun that turns everything to dust.
Both games challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into perilous environments in pursuit of vital resources. The primary distinction lies in the protagonists: This War of Mine involves guiding a diverse group of civilians, while The Alters introduces a unique ensemble made up of alternate versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from launch day, ensuring a wide audience can experience this innovative take on survival and alternate realities.
