Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development

By ChloeMar 21,2025

The announcement of an Ōkami sequel at last year's Game Awards sent ripples of excitement through the fanbase, yet details remained scarce. A recent IGN interview with the project leads shed some light, confirming the sequel's status as a direct continuation of the original game's story.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative ties to the first game. When asked if the TGA trailer featured Amaterasu, director Hideki Kamiya offered a cryptic "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi swiftly confirmed it was indeed the sun goddess.

PlayWhile unsurprising to many fans, the sequel's development sparked discussion about its relationship to *Ōkamiden*, a Nintendo DS title starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. *Ōkamiden*, released with mixed reception due to its platform and the absence of key original team members, including Kamiya, is acknowledged by Hirabayashi: "We know that there are fans out there that like the game, of course. And we also know the feedback on the game out there...With that, we also have the sequel now that...is a continuation from the story of the original base Ōkami."

The original Ōkami's ending naturally lends itself to a sequel, irrespective of Ōkamiden's events. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample room for new challenges and narratives.

However, further details remain elusive. The team confirmed the sequel is in very early development, the early announcement driven by excitement. Hirabayashi added that significant time may pass before further updates are shared.
