Application Description

Japanese Mahjong is a popular variant of the classic Mahjong game, known for its unique rules and scoring system. In this version, players aim to form a winning hand consisting of four melds and one pair. A meld can be either a sequence (like \[1, 2, 3\]), a triplet (such as \[6, 6, 6\]), or a triplet of honor tiles (\[N, N, N\]). An example of a valid hand would be: \[1, 2, 3\], \[6, 6, 6\], \[6, 7, 8\], \[N, N, N\], and \[4, 4\].

To interact with the game interface, you use a slider located beneath the screen. Slide it left or right to select the tile you wish to play, and simply tap to discard it. This intuitive control scheme makes gameplay smooth and accessible.

However, not all hands are valid when certain actions like Chi (stealing a tile to complete a sequence), Pon (stealing a tile to complete a triplet), or Open Kan (declaring a quad) are performed. Be especially cautious when using Chi or Pon on terminal tiles (1 or 9), as this may affect your hand’s validity. In Japanese Mahjong, at least one yaku (hand condition) is required to win. You can declare Reach — essentially announcing that you're one tile away from completing a valid hand — by paying a deposit of 1,000 points. However, once you perform Chi, Pon, or Open Kan, you forfeit the ability to declare Reach.

A closed hand (one where no calls have been made) typically yields higher points, so aiming for this can significantly boost your score. On the flip side, there's also the concept of a "Lost Hand." This occurs when a player is waiting on a winning tile but cannot Ron (win off another player's discard) because they've already discarded a tile needed for their hand. Even if all the necessary winning tiles are present, if you haven't drawn the specific one you need, it's still considered a Lost Hand. That said, self-draw remains possible even in this situation.

One key strategic point to remember is that Ron cannot be initiated by your opponent if you’ve already discarded a relevant tile. Additionally, you will never be Ron'd on a tile that you yourself discarded. Therefore, it's crucial to carefully reason out potential hands based on other players' discards and try to win accordingly.
