About Iroha Karuta
The Iroha poem represents the foundational collection of Japanese hiragana characters - a 47-letter classical poem beginning "Iroha ni hohedo..." that has shaped Japanese literacy since the Edo period. The poetic verses contain profound wisdom in their proverb-style phrases.
This traditional game originated in Kyoto during Japan's Edo period and spread to major cities including Osaka, Nagoya and Edo (modern Tokyo). Our app focuses on the Tokyo-style phrasing variations.
How to Play
We'll show you the opening line of an Iroha Karuta proverb. Your challenge is to select the correct second half from three possible options.
After each attempt, you'll receive immediate feedback on your answer along with a detailed explanation of the proverb's meaning and cultural significance.
