Application Description

Blackjack stands as the most widely enjoyed table game in casinos.

Introduction

Blackjack is the premier casino table game, featured at almost every online casino. Its low house edge and manageable variance make it an ideal option for meeting bonus wagering requirements where permitted.

Rules and Play

Hands in Blackjack are valued by summing the points of the cards. For instance, a hand with a 4, a 5, and a 6 totals 15. Face cards are each worth 10 points. Aces can count as either 1 or 11, meaning an Ace and a 7 can be either 8 or 18. The goal is to achieve a final total higher than the dealer's without exceeding 21. A total over 21 is a bust, causing an automatic loss of the bet regardless of the dealer's hand. A two-card 21 is called a "blackjack," the best possible hand, and pays a bonus at 3:2 odds, while other wins pay 1:1.

After placing a bet, both player and dealer receive two cards, with one of the dealer's cards face-up. Per standard rules, if the dealer shows an Ace or ten-value card, they check for a potential blackjack. If the dealer shows an Ace, players may buy "insurance" against a dealer blackjack, which pays 2:1 if the dealer's hole card is a ten-value card. In single-hand play, the house edge on insurance ranges from 2% to 15% depending on deck composition, making it generally disadvantageous except in specific situations like a ten-rich deck or when card counting. If the dealer has a blackjack, the round ends. Otherwise, the player acts on their hand with these options:

Stand — The player keeps their current cards and ends their turn.

Hit — The player draws an additional card and may continue hitting until they decide to stand, reach 21, or bust.

Double — The player doubles their initial bet and receives exactly one more card, ending their turn afterward. This option is typically only available on a two-card hand.

Split — When the first two cards are of equal rank, the player may split them into two separate hands, placing an additional bet. Each new hand receives one more card. If splitting Aces, only one additional card is drawn per Ace, and the turn ends. For other pairs, the player may then hit, stand, or double on each resulting hand. Re-splitting may also be allowed.

Strategy

Given the complex rules, the optimal strategy for blackjack is surprisingly straightforward. Players have no decisions about which specific cards to take; instead, they choose to bet on the Banker or Player hand, then wait for the cards to be revealed to determine the winner. Under typical conditions, Banker bets carry a slightly lower house edge than Player bets, as detailed below. Therefore, the optimal strategy is simply to bet on the Banker.
